Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.

Photographer Matthias Schaller creates a connection between mankind and space in his series “Disportraits.” He captures the faces of anonymity in each astronaut’s portrait with the reflection of the moon’s phases on the visors surface. The empty space suits showcase how mankind’s insatiable desires for exploration later abandon their quest for knowledge leaving behind a silent mark long after their exit.
