Macrocosm

By Christopher Domakis. Huge development areas with lots of massive residential “towers” and enormous separated complexes of buildings, at the scale of a district, represent the current face and (sometimes) surreal scenery of Chinese housing at the edge of a city. On the other hand this also represents the circumstances of the majority of 1,3 Billion citizens of China which is the macrocosm in this context.

Off The Grid

Diogene is a wooden hut, designed for single-person occupancy. Renzo Piano told The Guardian that “one of the most important things is to have happy buildings. It’s like having a family with a lot of children.” If that’s true, then Diogene is both the golden child and the runt in Piano’s family.

Mont Blanc

Refuge du Goûter started life as a hut, which despite its simplicity lasted just six years shy of a century. The existing refuge went up in 1960, but this is “out-dated and far from meeting modern environmental standards”. That’s according to the designers and constructors of a marvellous new building, which will be ready to receive intrepid visitors this summer.
